In recent times we have been privy to several Industrial disputes around the region which have cited issues associated with the physical state of buildings, including Sick Building Syndrome. Workers in Curacao, Trinidad and Tobago and Grenada, lawyers and laboratory technicians in Saint Lucia, and teachers in Barbados, have either walked off the job or have threatened labour action because they say the buildings in which they are working are making them sick.

p7Four tasks in five poultry houses were monitored for Particulate Matter (PM) concentrations together with a controlled environment. Significantly higher concentrations of PM were found when compared to the controlled environment and the World Health Organization (WHO), US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Trinidad and Tobago guidelines on maximum permissible levels. A DustTrak II Aerosol Monitor was used in measuring concentrations on PM2.5 and PM10 for the duration of each task and in the controlled environment. Monitoring was carried out over a 3-day period.

Manual Handling in an Office Environment

Mechanical devices are used to increase output, control costs, and maximise productivity in a workplace. Manual handling causes over a third of all workplace injuries. These include work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) such as pain and injuries to arms, legs and joints, and repetitive strain injuries of various sorts (Health and Safety Executive, n.d.). While offices have not previously been considered industrial establishments there is also some manual handling involved in achieving tasks in the workplace.
